Mamoru is one of the applicants for the Recette examination taking place in the Old Tokyo Recette Training Facility. After intentionally arriving late at the examination site to appear cool, Mamoru is barred by the proctor, Amanai, from participating and is asked to go home. He is later found by Tsumugi Minase bawling his eyes out and she advises him to apologize if he really wanted to participate in the examination. Mamoru begs Tsumugi to accompany him as he apologizes to Amanai. The proctor allows Mamoru to take part in the examination provided that he, and his unwilling partner Tsumugi, be given a penalty during the first part of the exam.[3]
